The seas of Tyrrell are typically, though not universally, divided into five separate oceans. Internationally they are known as the Crowned Ocean, the Jeweled Ocean, the Grand Ocean, the Gilded Ocean, and the Veiled Ocean. These oceans can also have more localized names in certain cultures. All of these oceans have had a distinct impact on the peoples and communities that live along them.

The northernmost ocean in Tyrrell is the Crowned Ocean. It is located between the north coast of West Ciradon, northwest Elysia, and eastern Leide. This ocean is named after the historic kingdoms and empires of the region and the vast wealth they possess. The name may also refer to its northerly location, situated on the top of Tyrrell like a crown.
The Crowned Ocean is the coldest of Tyrrell’s oceans, being located near the North Pole. Icebergs, glaciers, and sea ice are commonly found along the northern reaches of its waters. As a result merfolk are nearly absent from here. Due to the rapidly industrializing nature of West Ciradon, the Crowned Ocean is becoming increasingly polluted.
For centuries the Crowned Ocean has been a vital waterway, allowing the empires of West Ciradon to colonize other regions of the world. Important subsections of the Crowned Ocean include the North Sea, the Obalan Rift, and Farenno Bay.
Arguably the most historically important of the five oceans in Tyrrell. The Jeweled Ocean is located along the equator between the supercontinents of Ciradon and Parthus, with a small subsection touching eastern Elysia. The Jeweled Ocean is famous for its complex hydrography.
It is several thousand miles wide east to west, stretching roughly half way across Tyrrell. However it is often very narrow north to south, sometimes less than a thousand miles across. The narrow straits of the Jeweled Ocean often create powerful currents and waves, though the equatorial location and its proximity to land means that hurricanes here are rare.
In the center of this ocean is the Great Chains Archipelago, the longest island chain in Tyrrell. The waters of the Jeweled Ocean are typically warm and tropical, and the merfolk are believed to have originated here. The countless islands, bays, and peninsulas provide safe haven for sailors of all species.
For millennia the Jeweled Ocean has been vital to many important civilizations as the central link between the major continents. As traveling through this ocean is necessary for circumnavigating the globe, it holds by far the largest volume of trade even to this day.
The name of this ocean is believed to come from the vast treasure fleets and the precious cargo that carried through these waters. Important subsections of the Jeweled Ocean include the Ruby Sea, the Grand Gulf, the Amethyst Sea, the Emerald Sea, and the Sapphire Sea.
The Grand Ocean is primarily located in the southern hemisphere between East Ciradon, East Parthus, southern Leide, and southwest Elysia. In contrast to the Jeweled Ocean, the Grand Ocean is a vast region of uninterrupted open water with relatively few islands. Its name is derived from the large stretches of empty ocean.
These often create powerful storms and Tyrrell’s most active hurricane basin is located here. Ocean Crossings are noted to be long and arduous and require careful preparation. The lack of islands in this ocean along the cold waters of the south mean few merfolk live here.
Due to having little in the way of enclosed waters the Grand Ocean has few subsections, with the Yretz and Ralinth Bays being rare exceptions.
The Gilded Ocean is located between southeastern Elysia and the west coast of West Parthus. Sometimes considered a subsection of the Grand Ocean, the two are traditionally considered to be separated by Elysia's southern island chain. The Gilded Ocean is notable for its strong leylines and the magically gifted Elderkin civilizations along its shores.
The first cyclopes city states are believed to have come into existence along here. Near the center of this ocean is the Hasenthean Archipelago containing several large islands. Of all the oceans in Tyrrell, the Gilded Ocean perhaps has the smallest Lesserkin presence due to the entrenched Elderkin civilizations along its shores.
The name comes from the vast, wealthy, yet decadent and quarrelsome countries along the ocean's rim. Important subsections of the Gilded Ocean include the Silver Sea, the Vermiel Sea, and Thar'mir Bay.
The Veiled Ocean is located between the continents of East Ciradon and Leide. During its ancient history this ocean confounded explorers and sailors alike with its meandering currents, powerful waves, and dark squally weather. Frequent hurricanes in the south and powerful nor'easters to the north make navigation difficult, giving this ocean its name.
Due to its location in this ocean, the continent of Leide remained undiscovered by the outside world throughout the First Age. Up until the first explorers mapped out Leide, the Veiled Ocean was wrongly believed to be part of the Crowned Ocean. Some cultures still consider the two oceans to be the same to this day for cultural reasons.
The dividing line between the two oceans is typically placed at the Great Cratered Islands in the north of Leide. Important subsections of the Veiled Ocean include the Tupan Gulf, Ashlunna Gulf, and the Yawning Sea.
