Skywisps are a species of fieldic beast that live exclusively in the high altitude skies of Tyrrell. Resembling giant floating jellyfish, skywisps are gelatinous, balloon-like animals with long strands of thin tentacles dangling below. The top half of a skywisp is a bell shaped air sack about 7 meters across on average. This bell is believed to be filled with some type of methane based lifting gas magically enhanced through the field. Beneath this bell hang dozens of tentacles hundreds of feet long.
These tentacles gradually become thinner as they extend downward, eventually turning into hair like strings difficult to see at a distance. They use them to catch and absorb airborne flora and fauna. To help camouflage themselves skywisps have a somewhat transparent blueish color to them to help blend in with the sky. This species also has strong bio-electricity which is used to stun prey and ward off predators.
Skywisps typically feed upon birds, liftwood seeds, and even leviathans. They are in turn hunted by dragons and are highly vulnerable to their fire breath. These floating gas bags are not considered to be particularly intelligent, merely floating along in the wind and catching whatever happens to accidentally run into them. Skywisps that drift too close to the ground often get tangled up on the surface and die.
Due to their need for magic enhanced lifting gas they are rarely seen outside leyline rich areas. While Skywisps have been known throughout history most races rarely interacted with them other than sick and dying specimens who sunk to the ground. Dragon riders sometimes acknowledge them as airborne pests to be carefully avoided or shot down. In modern times Skywisps have proven to be a hazard to fast moving aircraft, with some inexperienced pilots accidentally crashing into them with fatal results.
