Kyrence

Uniquely, the Grand Duchy of Kyrence is not a state formed from a distinct culture or ethnic group, but was created through the complex feudal societies of the pre-nation state era. In 1740 of the old calendar, Aisaende Kyyrensiye, a noble of the Siyanderites in Frierendral was granted the fertile lands in the Western reaches of Frierendral for his service in the war against the Tree Dynasties as a general. However, when he died, his son came into a dispute with the Prince of the Siyanderites, and in a quick but decisive war of independence the Grand Duchy of Kyrence broke free from the Siyanderites and formed a new state in western Frierendral.

For almost 200 years Kyrence maintained its sovereignty, though it was later subjugated by the Tree Dynasties as a vassal state due to its lack of major natural defenses. Continuing as a vassal state, Kyrence’s status made it isolated and sheltered from the war which unified the rest of Frieredral, leading it to be the only remaining Frieredreli state which was not part of the newly formed empire.

Kyrence soon became diplomatically estranged from the Frierendreli Empire, forcing it to turn its trade away from Frierendral to primarily build commercial relations with the Tree Dynasties, and the Grand Duchy soon became heavily reliant on its overlord for basic resources such as lumber and its exports of grain.

When the War of the Dawn broke out and the Tree Dynasties’ economy collapsed and stopped importing grain, causing widespread poverty, which led to an estimated 30% of the Kyrencean population to become below the poverty line at one point in time. A popular movement to break away from the Tree Dynasties soon formed out of resentment, and the Grand Duke agreed to cut ties. The Tree Dynasties, weakened by the War of the Dawn and facing an economic crisis did not intervene out of fear of further hurting their stability.

Economically and politically backwards despite holding fertile lands, the Grand Duchy is a prospective target for any neighboring nations hoping to grow their influence and strength through war, and the government is helpless to stop it.

Kyrence is a semi-feudal society under an absolute monarchy. Counts and barons across the country still wield large amounts of power, conflicting with the attempts at reforming the country that many Grand Dukes have made. The government is therefore dysfunctional and actively harmful to the well-being of its citizens, causing public resentment against the Grand Duke and other prominent nobles.

Kyrence is deeply rural, and most of its small wealth comes from exporting and selling its grain production to foreign countries, along with high levels of taxation, and there are growing calls within Kyrencean society to join the Frieredreli Empire as its newest subject to save its economy.
