NATIONAL FLAG
"It was the arrival of the Elves that secured the victory against the Orcs, and the price in Turangan lives was overlooked."
- Unknown Scholar
Turangar, officially the Kingdom of Turangar, is a predominately human country located in West-Ciradon. Once, it was said to be the greatest nation of humanity, but after it was besieged during the Orcish Wars and rescued by the Elves, it became a shadow of its former self.
It has only been with the War of the Dawn and the advent of the Third Age that Turangar has begun rebuilding its former reputation, seeking to pay the Elderkin back for every human life 'overlooked' during their history.
EARLY HISTORY
Turangar was first explored by humanity during the third millennium of the First Age, though true civilization only began in the early years of the Second Age. Like many other human nations across Tyrrell, the Turangan landmass was left alone by the Elderkin due to the lack of magical Leylines.
Still, even for a land lacking in Leylines, Turangar was blessed with fertile soil, good river networks and held a strategic location for trade. These natural advantages bolstered the nation's early population, allowing them to develop more rapidly than most other Lesserkin nations.
During the dawn of the Second Age, the tribes of Turangar were able to unite and expand their reach to cover the entire peninsula. From here, they began working iron and steel, being one of the first human nations to do so. Word of this development surprised many of the surrounding Elderkin nations, like those of Midboria, the Guildholds of the Red Mountains and the Divine Bastion of Umridel.
Uniquely, its knights were often sent to nations such as Tassendrel to both train and serve in the elfish empires, where they were relatively welcomed, a respect generally unheard of for any of its other human contemporaries. It was around this era at the peak of Turangan power that three great citadels were constructed.
The citadels were highly advanced fortifications for the time, and are also considered architectural works of art. The first of these, Fort Lumara, is located atop the silver hill of Lumara overlooking the capital, acting as the king's residence and houses the kingdom's government.
The second and the largest, named the Dragonspire Citadel, guards the eastern border marked by the Striarch River, it is built from locally sourced black basalt which gives its imposing appearance. It gets its name from a detachment of dragon riders sent from Umridel stationed there as a token of friendship.
The third and final castle is the Bastion of Ember's Pass, a castle guarding the trade lanes surrounding the capital, and is a hub for travelers in itself, regarded as the liveliest of the three castles.
THE ORCISH WARS
Turangar enjoyed relative peace and prosperity for several centuries. When the Orcish Wars began from the Red Steppes, and countless orc warlords and their armies looted and pillaged their way to Turangar, the kingdom held steadfast in its defiance. Dragonspire Citadel, with its garrison of knights and dragon rider detachment, successfully defended against several attempted offensives by orcish troops. However, when Pergu'gash's host, the largest orc army, began a renewed assault on the citadel, the attacking forces eventually broke through the Turangan defenses, destroying the citadel's armed garrison in the process.
After capturing the Dragonspire, Pergu'gash advanced onto Ember's Pass, engaging in large scale pillaging and murder in the Turangan countrysid. Ember's Pass was, as a result, overwhelmed by the number of refugees and succumbed to starvation only six months into the siege. The second fortress was felled and the path to Lumara lay open.
The siege of Lumara was an important strategic battle, with Lumara standing between the orc forces and the capital city. Turangan forces during the siege suffered heavy casualties, with the king allegedly losing his life to an arrow. The people of the city voluntarily donated whatever food or supplies they had left to the defenders, oftentimes volunteering for battle in spite of the low survival rate.
Despite the mounting casualties of Lumara however, the defense won them enough time for Elderkin reinforcements to arrive, the subsequent battle routed the Orcish armies and killed their warlord Pergu'gash. The battle would later be remembered as the day when elfish forces they heroically rescued the world and humanity from the carnage of the orcs. The sacrifice and bravery of the people of Turangar was merely a foot note. For Turangans, even though the elves claim the glory of driving back the orcs all to themselves. Every Turangan knows deep in their heart that it was on the tip of a human arrow that the Pergu'gash met his end.
DECLINE
The Orcish Wars devastated the kingdom, two of its fortresses lay in ruin, a third of its population lay dead to either the hands of orcs or by famine, and most of its knights were killed in battle. What followed was a long period of decline and instability. It was not until half a century after the Orcish Wars was the government once again able to exert its influence outside the borders of its capital, and many more years for the kingdom to recover its full territory again.
Even after Turangar recovered its full territory, the kingdom was never what it once was. Never again did a single knight from Turangar make the trek west again, Dragonspire and Ember's Pass were never rebuilt, forever serving as a reminder of past glories. The people, suffering such a massive defeat, never again looked at their banner with pride and loyalty, instead the kept their heads down, thinking about nothing but their next meal until their dying breath.
RENAISSANCE AND THE MODERN DAY
Even before the events that unfolded in Voskgardia, Turangar was in a period of resurgence. The Orcish Wars were far off history and the kingom had recovered well from its wounds. With the strength to push beyond its borders once gain, Turangar embarked on an ambitious journey to colonize the vast and lightly populated frontiers leftover by the Orcish Wars. With leftover orcish tribes still roaming the lands, they were long considered too dangerous for human habitation.
Turangar took on the challenge, aiming to colonize the entire bank of the Striarch River leading up to the Red Mountains, as well as its surrounding areas. Despite the hostility of the orcish tribes living there, the initiative presses on till this day.
Since that time, Turangar has embraced industry with enthusiasm. Though still far from the same level as the other human states of Mitannia and Vosk-Moreva and dependent on Mitannian imports for many of its industrial sectors,
Turangar is rapidly catching up and may even surpass the other human nations in the not so distant future. Turangar also already boasts the largest aeronautics industry in the world, its aircraft designe being produced in the hundreds and even thousands, sold to both domestic and foreign buyers. The colonization initiative continues and is rapidly bolstered by the nation's rapid industrialization.
Overall, Turangar in the modern day is defined by hope and vigor, a nation with infinite potential waiting to be released.
The Turangan armed forces are composed of the army, navy, and air force. Turangar was the first human nation to establish an independent air service and it's Air force is considered the most powerful in the world.
The other branches often take a back seat in terms of media attention and funding, which has created some inter-service rivalry between the Air force and the other branches.
ROYAL ARMY OF TURANGAR
The Turangaran Army is relatively small for a human nation its size, numbering aroun 100,000. Its primary function is protecting the frontier territories from orc incursions. It mostly consists of light infantry armed and cavalry, armed with Type B rifles imported from Mitannia.
ROYAL NAVY OF TURANGAR
The Turangan Navy is a ramshackle force, with vessels that run the gamut from sailing ships to modern cruisers. The modern warships fielded by Turangar are generally built by Mitannia as Turangar lacks the capabilities to build them domestically. Besides conventional warships, Turangar also pioneers the aircraft carrier, a concept developed by the navy to circumvent Turangar's inability to produce naval guns.
ROYAL AIR FORCE OF TURANGAR
The Turangan Air Force is the most powerful branch of the Turangan armed forces, fielding hundreds of modern bombers and fighters, all produced by domestic manufacturers.
The Air Force has its roots in Turangar's traditional knight class, who after their decimation during the Orcish wars turned to more humanitarian causes. After the advent of industrialization, they saw aviation as a way to regain their former glory, founding flight schools and investing in the aeronautics industry. The aristocratic roots of the air force cause many in Turangar to see the air force as a rebirth of Turangar's chivalric traditions, and a symbol of the revitalization of Turangar as a whole.
