The Darkwood Larch, also known as the False Larch, is a species of non-fieldic tree native to the southern taigas of East Parthus. A deciduous tree with needle like leaves, they are capable of growing up to 30 m (98 ft) tall and with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter. The Darkwood Larch is renowned for its cold tolerance, being able to withstand temperatures of -70 degrees centigrade. As such it is the southernmost naturally occurring tree in Tyrrell, though trees have been grown further south in Goryn with the aid of magic.
This species, while capable of withstanding extreme cold, will not tolerate warm or overly humid climates. They also tend to like somewhat acidic soil. Despite its common name, the Darkwood Larch is not a true relative of northern larch trees and instead belongs to the same genus as southern needle-leaf. Its resemblance to true larch trees is believed to be due to convergent evolution as a result of their similar environments. The Darkwood Larch can live up to 1000 years in age.
Throughout their range the Darkwood Larch is a valued source timber. The wood they produce is hard and resistant to rot and flames. After drying out the wood has a rich umber color noted for its brilliant dark shades, hence the trees common name. Darkwood Larch is one of the most common species used in forestries throughout nations such as Humila, Karelen, or the Palatinate. Often Darkwood timber fetches high prices in regions outside of East Parthus, leading to its increased export in recent decades.
