Among the many wondrous creatures that dwell in the world of Tyrrell are the Mothcats. They are small six-legged winged creatures with large eyes, soft fur, and a somewhat rambunctious nature, the mothcat is said to have originated in the woodlands of Tassendrel sometime in the Second Age.
They were initially domesticated when elves found mothcats wandering in their settlements looking for food, namely vermin like mice, which devour grain. The mothcat, however, would become something far beyond a mere destroyer of pests; it would become a pet.
The mothcat would spread at a rapid pace, usually brought to new lands by wealthy families. It would be noted that like dragons and kraken, the mothcat is a Fieldic creature; without the magic that dwells within it, it would be unable to fly.
As such, mothcats would be popular only amongst the Elderkin, as mothcats that are brought to Field-poor areas, such as human nations, become sickly and lethargic. Contrary to their name, mothcats have little biological relation to cats or moths, though cats are a little closer due to both of them being mammals.
However, mothcats lay eggs (like the creature known as the platypus), and do not meow; rather, they can only purr. Mothcats typically live for 40-50 years, though some have been known to live up to 70. They reproduce with a single offspring at a time, and have their mating seasons with the beginning of each summer.
Male mothcats will fight each other in spectacular aerial duels during these mating seasons; the losers will often end up with a torn wing, though it heals within weeks.
There are hundreds of breeds of mothcat, whose primary divergence are their fur colors. A few extremely expensive breeds, however, are instead bred for their Fieldic potential, and are sometimes used as familiars by Elderkin mages.
