Week 9 - Portraits
SHINDY LEONG
SHINDY LEONG
In today's session we had portrait life drawing where we drew each other. Portrait life drawing gives a better understanding of the basic structures and allows you to use these basic structures as a framework for a drawing. The warm up was to pick up the volume and shadow of the face and analyze the proportions. Afterwards we did sketches from the front and 45-degree angles to understand the perspective, we used the box method to get the proportions and perspective.
Portrait drawing has been the most difficult session so far, I still have to practice on the face proportions, volume, perspectives etc. But it was a fun session to learn the basic structures and the various techniques. I found two interesting videos that gives a clear understanding of how to draw the head from different angles and how to divide it into thirds. [1]
How to Draw the Head from Any Angle, by Proko [2]

How to Draw Heads - Dividing it Into Thirds, by Robert Marzullo [3]
I did a few exercises by following the two videos, how to draw the head from any angle and divide it into different proportions I used an image from google as a portrait and did some shading, the results aren't great. I managed to get the shape correct but I need to practice on the detailing, but I learned how to analyze the face better. I got a much better understanding of it and it helped me a lot.
I marked the lines with different colours where each colour is a guideline for the proportions
