Week 2 - Gormenghast
SHINDY LEONG
SHINDY LEONG
In today’s task we read the Gormenhast by Mervyn Peake, the two characters by the name Rottcodd and Mr.Flay. While reading the Gormenhast I had to pick out the role the character fulfills, personality and disposition and plot points. Through these points I could develop the two characters.
I started creating geometry shapes that seemed to fit the characters and draw different postures that was described in the text. Then I started making sketches that would suit the character the most.
From the descriptions about the characters I sketched the way I could image them look like. Rottcodd has a round head with his neck wobbling around, wears glasses, small eyes, shape as a sack and carries a feather duster. And Flay is quite skinny, tall, bony and knees cracking. He also seems more like an introvert since he is uncommunicative. Both characters have a bony face and skinny face which look a bit similar, but the pose would describe the characters. Rottcodd slept most of his life in the hammock and would carry his feather duster.
What I could have done better is draw different sketches of Flay's and Rottcodd's face appearance and not just stick to one appearance. Also, I have to find the correct pen when sketching to make my lines more confident.
