Week 7 - Modelling III - Detail
SHINDY LEONG
SHINDY LEONG
In today's session we had our third modelling lesson, the goal was to focus on the details. I decided to model the cucumber that has a simple oval shape. I began with a turnaround of the character, what I mostly focused on what the volume of the body and the mouth. The head is slightly leaning to left side, and the cucumber's looks curious. While looking into the depth of the mouth it looks like it had a high depth.
I cut the foam blocks into small basic shapes, my goals was to make keep the foam blocks small. Looking back into the week 5 and week 6 I did the mistake by cutting the foam blocks too big which prevented me to work with the shapes.
Afterwards I added the plasticine to get an oval shape and rolled it to get smoother edges. Next, I removed some plasticine in the middle part for a mouth opening. I had to go back and forward with it to get the correct shape. Eventually I did the legs to make it stand up and make my sculpting easier. I also used some water to smooth out the model.
I added the eyes and made the tip, afterwards I started with the detailing. With a ruler I created the lines and carefully smoothed the edges with my fingers with water. Including the dots on the cucumber, I used the ruler to press down the dot's edges and used a wet q-tip to access the smaller areas and smooth it out.
Lastly, I made the arms which I thought would be difficult due to the leaves. But, I flattened the clay on the table and did light strokes to get the correct shape and cut it out.
I'm glad about the outcome, and I have improved and learned a lot from these modelling sessions. Something I could have improved is make the body shape a bit longer, it doesn't look very oval. And overall the mistakes I have done has made me more careful.
