This semester has been very exciting and interesting, there have been parts I enjoyed more than others. Designing characters wasn't my strongest side, but this has improved my understanding of the character development. At the beginning for the course I wasn't very confident with my drawing, especially the human form. As the semester went by, I improved by each week and got a better understanding of the characters.
Through the weekly tasks and lectures we were given a brief, design a character based on a written text. I chose the book "The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition by Grimm, Jacob" and to create Snow White. I decided to create a human because it's one of my weaknesses and my first time modelling a human. The tasks given from earlier weeks have a connection with the brief, such as Locke Lamora, Gormenghast and Little Dorrit. What I learnt by researching and reading these extracts have showed me that everyone has different aspects of a character. So, designing the character Snow White would be a challenge for me since she is already an iconic character. The research gave me a better image of Snow White, such as her personality and her interactions with the seven dwarfs.
Before, I was struggling with the body gesture, weight and volume, the posture of my drawing got better as the course weeks went by. During the tasks we would go out and draw humans to understand the posture, volume and weight of the body, and everything about it did not work very well. Thanks to the tasks I got a better understanding of the body gesture. When I read extracts about Snow White it allowed me to connect her personality with her body language as she as seems shy, helpful and confident. Due to the earlier tasks this really helped me to develop my character easier and quicker.
The modelling sessions were very fun. I have worked with 3D modelling before on Maya such as example, so the modelling turnarounds wasn't a big issue for me. These modelling sessions were extremely helpful as it allowed me to understand the weight and volume of the body.
When it comes to character development I have to work on my drawing on paper since I usually prefer to skip it since I'm not very confident with the lines. Overall when it came to the brief, I'm happy with my choice as it allowed me to improve my weaknesses and challenge myself. I gained a lot of experience through this module and how to approach different areas, especially when it comes to do doing rough sketches to avoid details which I tend to distract me and the modelling to always start with the basic structure.
