Reflective Summary
SHINDY LEONG
SHINDY LEONG
For this module I have gone through elliptical drawings, lines, life drawing, isometric & perspective drawing, imagination, portraits and painting. Throughout these sessions I have learnt the meanings behind it and learnt different techniques through tasks, research and the lessons. Drawing on paper has never been my strongest side, but this module has improved my drawing a lot.
An important step I have picked up from all the sessions is the limited time we had to draw objectives. Since then I have always began with the basic structures, it helps me analyse and create the basic outlines quicker. And it’s always important to look at the hidden objects to understand the entire structure, since the perspective can change the whole shape. As the weeks went by, I got better at drawing and locating objects such as the ellipses.
When it comes to framework for body, buildings and etc I found it very useful as this can be useful in games. As example, before designing or selecting a game there must be some investigation. This gives a better understanding of the object and further learn the process. There are various frameworks, as there are different game genres. Another example could be the environment, as you have to understand the story, culture and objectives before producing it.
Looking at isometric and perspective drawing, I found these session more fun than the life drawing sessions. This is because I haven't done a lot of life drawing, when it came to isometric drawing I was confident with the one and two point perspective. The three point perspective was difficult for me, but I did some practice at home and eventually got a better understanding of it. Isometric drawing gives a realistic drawing of the height, width and depth of an object. On the other hand, there are plenty of isometric games, due to the 3D elements on a 2D display it makes the game look realistic. Isometric games can occur in strategic games as it allow the player to analyse the area.
During the weekly tasks I took notes on what I had to improve on from the daily sessions where I practiced on my drawing and did some research at home. This really helped me find other techniques which I eventually could use in the next sessions. Drawing hands was always an issue for me because I did not know how to begin and I did not understand the hand structure. Doing some hand study and using the basic outlines helped me a lot, as for the next lessons I could draw hands a lot quicker and easier through analysation thanks to the research.
Life Drawing I
Life drawing II
Life drawing III
In this module we had three life drawing sessions, and I have never done anything similar to this before. My biggest weakness in this module was the human form, looking back at work I have done before and now is a great improvement. This is through a lot of research, practice and techniques used from the lectures and other references.
Life drawing is a way to improve my drawing skills, draw better forms and experience different perspectives. This was a challenge for me, I struggled with the gesture lines, body proportion, did too hard strokes, wrong head placement, volume and weight. Step by step I began to notice the small mistakes I made, such as the head angle, feet placement, hips (twist) and spine.
I eventually started creating light marks and put more pressure into it afterwards. Using this technique made it more effective and improved my understanding of the basic structures. Every life drawing session got more challenging, and there was always something I had to think about. Such as the weight and volume I had to think about each time, and this made me understand and the process of drawing. Through the life drawing sessions, this really helped my eyes to look from different perspective.
Left and middle human body is the left image above. Right one is the right image above.
When practising I would go through my camera roll and pick out a few images of people with different gestures. And I found this method very useful and informative, this allowed me to analyse different body proportions. Also, the weight and volume of the body, as the human body would stand still, sit or walk. I spent more time on working on those mistakes through the study tasks we had, one example could be the portrait were I drew the head from different angles.
Through all the methods and learning from above we created our own character from our own imagination by using our gestures from our life drawing sessions. As we did five-point turnaround of the character I found challenging. The outcome was better than expected, and this is because I learned the different techniques through this module. My drawing is more on the stronger side now and I start to enjoy things I did not enjoy drawing. I wish the module was a bit longer since I want to improve in specific areas such as perspective drawing. But all the challenges and this module has really improved my drawing and given me a better understanding.
