Week 5 - Modelling I
SHINDY LEONG
SHINDY LEONG
In today's session we did modeling in basic shapes. We had to pick one of the three characters (image below) from the Tim Burton’s nightmare before Christmas. The following steps I did was to break the body into primitive shapes and measure it into different sections. Plan how to create it the maquette with different tools by using foam blocks, aluminum, wires and glue gun. Using these tools will decrease the weight of the model, the maquette was sculpted with plasticine. What I learnt from this lesson is to think about the weight, so isn't too heavy. And measure and break the image into simple shapes.
I started with a quick drawing by dividing the body into five sections, such as hat, head, body, arms and legs. And did the measurement afterwards, I assumed the hat was 1/3 of the body, which eased my calculation of the body (image 1 below). I used a 20 cm wire to shape the body, the reason is because the hat curves at the end and I wanted the tip of the hat to be stable. (image 2 below). I cut the foam blocks into primitive shapes such as the head and body, I eventually added the aluminium to shape the figure. The part I used aluminium were the hat, head and the body to shape the dress. I eventually started to add plasticine build up the sculpture.
I'm happy with how the process went and the planning. But something I could have done better is to cut the foam blocks smaller next time, so I can build it up and shape it the way I want. The hard edges from the foam block prevented me from creating the curves I wanted. Although, it was a fun session. This made me focus more on the turnarounds, and gave me a better understanding of the volume and posture.
