Scotland

During the Wars of Scottish Independence, William Wallace helped launch a successful military guerrilla campaign against the English. In 1297 he had won great victory over the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, after which he was knighted as Guardian of Scotland. In 1298, Wallace was in command at the Battle of Falkirk, but was defeated by the superiority of the English numbers. He briefly escaped capture, but was eventually caught at Robroyston near Glasgow and delivered by a senior Scottish law officer to the King of England, Edward Longshanks. Wallace was subjected to a show trial, in which he was found guilty of treason and hanged, drawn, and quartered at Smithfield, London in 1305.
