Woodlandia Shirley (WAS)

The Woodlandia Shirley (sign: $; code: WAS; also abbreviated WAS$ and referred to as the shirley, Woodlandic Shirley, Woodlandian Shirley, Woodlander Shirley or Woodlandic dollar) is the official currency of the Principality of Woodlandia. The Woodlandia Shirley (dollar) is pegged at a one-to-one ratio with the Canadian dollar.

1. History

On March 12, 2019, (same day as Woodlandia's declaration of independence) the Royal Bank of Woodlandia (R.B.W.) of Woodlandia had implemented plans for the first coins of the Principality of Woodlandia, called the "Freedom Family Series" or "Series 1 Coins" to be produced and distributed as the official currency of Woodlandia. On 12 August 2019 the first of the banknotes were released.

Series 1 - Freedom Family Series

A total of four coins (¢25, ¢50, $1, and $2) complete the series.

The first coins of Series 1 - Freedom Family (of the twenty five kennys (cent) denomination) was issued on 2019, with the remaining denominations issued every three months increasing in value.

August 12, 2019 - The Twenty Five kenny (25¢ cent) coin was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia.
November 12, 2019 - The Fifty kenny (50¢ cent) coin was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia.

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, production of the remaining coins was temporarily halted for six months.

May 12, 2020 - The One shirley ($1 dollar) coin was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia after a six month hiatus of its originally scheduled release of February 12, 2020.
August 12, 2020 - The Two shirley ($2 dollar) coin was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia. The coin was originally due for release on May 12, 2020.

2. Etymology

The first series of coins are named Freedom Family, in honor of the freedom and success attained by the Principality of Woodlandia for its independence from Canada, and in honor of Sovereign Prince Shawn and the Royal family for supporting his claim.

REVERSE FEATURE: HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia

The fifty kenny (cent) coin features the face of HM King Kenneth of Ardania, grandfather to HRH the Sovereign Prince Shawn. The coin is often referred to as a ken, as a way of avoiding confusion of calling both, a 50¢ coin, and the monetary unit of the cent, kenny, both respectively in their own right. On the reverse, the 50¢ coin features the face of HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia.

The two shirley (dollar) coin features the faces of two sisters, HRH Princess Kimberly of Ardania and HRH Princess Krista of Ardania, twin aunts to HRH the Sovereign Prince Shawn, On the reverse, the $2 coin features the face of HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia.
