Woodlandia Shirley (WAS)

The Woodlandia Shirley (sign: $; code: WAS; also abbreviated WAS$ and referred to as the shirley, Woodlandic Shirley, Woodlandian Shirley, Woodlander Shirley or Woodlandic dollar) is the official currency of the Principality of Woodlandia. The Woodlandia Shirley (dollar) is pegged at a one-to-one ratio with the Canadian dollar.

1. History

On March 12, 2019, (same day as Woodlandia's declaration of independence) the Royal Bank of Woodlandia (R.B.W.) had implemented plans for the first series of banknotes of the Principality of Woodlandia, called the "Freedom Family Series" or "Series 1 Banknotes" to be produced and distributed as the official currency of Woodlandia. On 12 June 2019 the first of the banknotes were released.

Series 1 - Freedom Family

A total of five banknotes ($5, $10, $20, $50, and $100) complete the series. All of the first series banknotes were printed on paper.

The first banknotes of Series 1 - Freedom Family was issued on June 12, 2019, with the next remaining denominations issued every three months increasing in value.

June 12, 2019 - The Five shirleys ($5 dollar) banknote was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia.
September 12, 2019 - The Ten shirleys ($10 dollar) banknote was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia.
December 12, 2019 - The Twenty shirleys ($20 dollar) banknote was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia.

Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, production of the remaining banknotes was temporarily halted for six months.

June 12, 2020 - The Fifty shirleys ($50 dollar) banknote was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia after a six month hiatus of its originally scheduled release of March 12, 2020.
September 12, 2020 - The One Hundred shirleys ($100 dollar) banknote was put into circulation throughout the Principality of Woodlandia. The banknote was originally due for release on June 12, 2020.

2. Etymology

Freedom Family - Series 1

The first series of banknotes are named Freedom Family, in honor of the freedom and success attained by the Principality of Woodlandia for its independence from Canada, and in honor of Sovereign Prince Shawn and the Royal family for supporting his claim.

The five shirleys (dollar) banknote features the face of HRH the Princess Royal Brittany, sister to HRH the Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia on the front. The banknote is often referred to as a Brittany or a Britt. On the reverse, the banknote features a Woodlandia national symbol (national bird) in the form of a hummingbird. The main colour of the banknote is orange with yellow and black accents.

The ten shirleys (dollar) banknote features the face of HM Queen Tracy, Duchess of Liberty, mother to HRH the Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia on the front. The banknote is often referred to as a Duchess or a Dutch. On the reverse, the banknote features a Woodlandia national symbol (national tree) in the form of a birch bark. The main colour of the banknote is blue with white and purple accents.

FRONT FEATURE: HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn of the Principality of Woodlandia

The twenty shirleys (dollar) banknote features the face of HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn of the Principality of Woodlandia on the front. The banknote is often referred to as a Prince or a Sovereign. On the reverse, the banknote features a Woodlandia national royal symbol in the form of a lion. The main colour of the banknote is red.

NOTE: The $20 banknote was the last banknotes released in the Freedom Family series. The next banknote in the series not released into circulation until after March 12, 2020, leaving a six month hiatus due to the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

NAME: Dowager or Dow

COLOUR: Purple

FRONT FEATURE: HM Dowager Queen Shirley

REVERSE FEATURE: Thistle

The fifty shirleys (dollar) banknote features the face of HM the Dowager Queen Mother of Mull Shirley, maternal grandmother to HRH the Sovereign Prince Shawn of Woodlandia on the front. The banknote is often referred to as a Dowager or a Dow, as a way of avoiding confusion of calling both, a $50 banknote and the official currency of Woodlandia, shirley, both respectively in their own right. On the reverse, the banknote features a Woodlandia national symbol (national flower) in the form of a thistle. The main colour of the banknote is purple with pink accents.

NAME: Wallace or Wally

COLOUR: Green

FRONT FEATURE: St. Wallace (Sir William Wallace)

REVERSE FEATURE: Wolf

The one hundred shirleys (dollar) banknote features the face of the Guardian of the Kingdom of Scotland, St. William Wallace, patron Saint of the Principality of Woodlandia and national hero on the front. The banknote is often referred to as a Wallace or a Wally. On the reverse, the banknote features a moon, and a Woodlandia national symbol (national animal) in the form of a wolf. The main colour of the banknote is green with white and brown accents.

4. Did You Know? - Woodlandia Banknotes

Woodlandia currency does not feature Woodlandia's Coat of Arms or its National Flag.
The twenty shirley bill featuring HRH Sovereign Prince Shawn is the only banknote in series 1 to feature a capital "o" in "Principality of Woodlandia". All other banknotes use lower case o's.
