Riff wasn't sure about life out of the junkpile at first. He cowered under the furniture while most of his siblings explored their new digs. But Inaba's chicken filets are irresistible to even the spiciest kittens. Riff followed his nose out to gobble up bits of chicken.
But the chicken was attached to scary human hands. It is difficult to simultaneously try to chomp chicken and hide from hands, but Riff made a valiant attempt. Don't worry- the wounds on my fingers healed quickly!
By morning Riff decided I was as wonderful as chicken and he joined in the kitten piles that happened in my lap every time I sat down. There's not a hint of the scared kitten anymore. He's an extremely loving kitten. Riff is a perfect blend of play and purr. He scampers about with his toys and siblings, keeping himself entertained. After his first night of spastic fear eating, he has never caused any trouble. When it's time to settle in for the night, he's often one of the first to pop over to snuggle in with me.
6/10/22 Update Riff learns by observation. When something new is presented (like a new toy or house guests), he watches gung-ho Raff and fearless Jetsam dive in, followed closely by Flotsam. He waits longer to see how Scrapper fares when she joins in. But once he learns something, he becomes masterful! He's picked up and perfected some of my favorite traits from each of his siblings.
From Raff, he learned to pounce, leap, and do aerial acrobatics with abandon (once he knows the toy is safe). Scrapper taught him to stalk toys and enjoy trapping me on the potty with irresistible lap cuddles. Flotsam showed him the joy of morning snuggles filled with lots of kisses and face cuddles. And of course, Jetsam shared his foodie heart and climbing skills.
His face is one of the first things I see when I wake in the morning. I've discovered recently he loves feather wand toys more than any of the other toys. Once he catches it, he will drag it all over, growling softly to let everyone know it is HIS. Not that they listen... they'll happily steal it so Riff can just as happily reclaim it.
6/15/22 Riff gets sweeter with time. He's been super affectionate lately. Maybe he knows he's leaving soon? He's getting snipped now and will go to adoption in just 10 days. I'm going to miss him!!
6/17/22 Caught Riff's reaction to dogs!! He's ALWAYS startled when he sees them, but once he calms down he tolerates their presence.
