Less than a week before the puzzles headed to Petsmart for adoption I finally got an appointment to have some fun with my hair. Every so often after donating most of my virgin hair, I have fun with hair color while it's short. Typically I do at-home jobs, but this time I decided to get it professionally done. Abby @ The Vault did an amazing job!
While waiting on some bleach, we shared pet pictures- and I mentioned that Kakuro and Sudoku would be going up for adoption that weekend. By chance, she was considering a kitten for her dog, Boots. Boots was desperate to play with her 18 year old cat, Blackie- who wanted nothing to do with energetic BOots. Abby loved Kakuro's white feet, as Boots had little white toes also. A few days later, we arranged for Kakuro to make a home visit to see how she might do with Boots. Because of her medication schedule, sister Jigsaw went along. Kakuro and Jigsaw were both tense at first, but they were raised with my two dogs and Boots was pretty amazing with them! With time, pets, and my secret weapon: chicken filets, we had a pretty peaceful co-existence before the kittens and I left.
Kakuro, now Mittens, is adjusting to her new home. Now that she's there full time, Boots is a little overly excited and a little more insistent on getting kitten attention. Mitten's new family worries that Mittens will be very unhappy in their home, but they're committed to given her time to decompress and adjust. I'll be going over there tomorrow to help with Boots training and I can't wait to see her again. Boots was a very smart puppy and Kakuro was playing on/over my dogs, so I do think we can help them be friends.
As a happy surprise, Blackie and Mittens have been caught snuggling! Our hope, when she was considering adoption, was that Blackie would tolerate the kitten the same way she begrudgingly tolerates Boots- and that kitten would play with Boots so Blackie could be left alone. Fingers and paws crossed that Mittens can be both a cuddle buddy with Blackie and a playmate with Boots!
It's been about a year, and Mittens is happily settled in. She and Boots do get along. She's so grown up now!
