September 2019

Hello Editors!

Waze communities are doing amazing things - read all about them in the new edition of our communities newsletter!

Thanks for reading and keep us updated about the awesome things you do!

Swedish Champ in the News

A Swedish reporter interviewed our very own Ultich, to understand the magic that is the Waze editor community. The article emphasized the fact that despite the advanced technology, at the end of the day it’s the community that makes the difference (From left to right: ulle2 and hurja).

Waze...now in Finnish!

The Waze Finnish community, working hand-in-hand with the localization team, translated Waze so it can now tell you where to turn or warn of upcoming traffic jams in Finnish. Two community members worked extra hard to make it happen - Kari translated and Roope helped out in the studio. A huge thanks to them and everyone else who made this possible! Latvia - Adding Places to the Map

The Latvian community decided to make it easier for Waze users to add places to the map. Why? They claim using WME is not always friendly and to simplify matters for regular users they created a special, simple form. Using social media to spread the word, the community is confident it will make users’ lives much easier.

Uruguay - Editors for Democracy

Uruguay held an election last June and the community made sure that the democratic process had the benefit of an updated map. Members made sure all voting locations were mapped correctly, double checking names & addresses, and added missing locations. All in all more than 2,500 places were verified or added. Even the press noticed!

Chile - Navigating to the Eclipse

Chile was in a unique position to view the July 2019 solar eclipse. There were even special designated lookout spots with an excellent view. The community decided to make sure citizens and tourists alike had an easy time reaching designated viewing points and mapped all the relevant roads and shortcuts (special kudos to wrocco).

Brazil - Major events challenge

Major events that affect traffic on a large scale is where Waze shines. The community responds quicker than anyone, helping users navigate to safety. The Brazilian community decided to take MTEs (major traffic events) to the next level, and set a challenge to increase the number of events they can handle. They mentored new editors, gave points per event, closure and more. They even had a first place prize - inviting the best editor to the meetup with Waze. All this effort resulted in responding to 527 events, closing 1,467 kilometers and 11,767 segments between February and May. The winners were LPMarti, nelramos and lxwr.

License Plate Restrictions in Peru

When Peru launched license plate restrictions the local community sprang into action. Editors posted about the new feature in the forum and started mapping the restrictions so drivers can navigate according to their specific licence plate number. Licence Plate Restrictions were released successfully on August 27th in Lima and Arequipa.
