Belgium's Back to School alerts

The community in Belgium has made a beautiful tradition out of warning drivers around school zones.

Preparing for the new school year, the local community used the Waze Feed to create Hazard alerts around mapped schools. With these alerts in place, wazers who drive near schools during certain times of the day, get a pop-up and a vocal alert asking them to drive extra carefully, since kids might be on the road. Thanks for looking out for our next generation of Wazers :)

Malaysian community blood donation

The Malaysian community is known for doing great things, and so once every 4 months they meet for a special reason - to donate blood. Participating community members put on a Waze shirt and go to the clinic together, to donate their blood as a group. The next donation is planned for December 12th, 2020, so if you're in the area, consider joining this lovely community.

Meet a Top Contributor - Tom from Belgium

Tom discovered he loved editing the map, after using the now deprecated Google Map Maker. The local community helped him learn all about the WME, and he quickly searched for ways to make mapping more efficient, so he started writing scripts to utilize the government's open data.

Today, after contributing much to the map and community, Tom serves in several roles. He acts as a Coordinator, Global Champ and Script Writing Community Coordinator.

Tom invites community members to reach out to him about userscripts and adding Map Update notifications and New Version alerts to your community channels.

Tom's advice to new editors is to "Never hesitate to ask for help from your fellow editors! Experienced editors sometimes make things look very easy, but they all made mistakes when they first started editing". Thanks, Tom!

Italian community making it to the news!

The renewed Genoa bridge was recently inaugurated after its collapse in 2018. The Italian community was mentioned in several articles for their important role in keeping drivers away from the site of the collapsed bridge by promptly updating the map. Thanks to the local community, just 20 minutes after the incident, the map was already updated with all the road closures so the app could provide alternative routes, lighten traffic, and allow emergency vehicles to quickly reach the affected area.
