Sometime ago, When I heard about Serverless computing from my friend, I got puzzled. How we can leave behind servers? Servers are omnipresent. This query pulled me into discussion with my friend working in this niche domain. He clarified my doubt and also consoled me that he also had same doubt. He explained me like this:
Think that you are a businessman who wants to create your own e-shop and you are thinking how to do this. Managing IT is not your cup of tea. Still, you need to take care of IT infrastructure, You might tell that I will use cloud infra instead of physical infra. Are you thinking that you are saved? Note that you still need to take care of VMs, infra softwares (JVM, OS) upgrade etc. Still you think same? Really not. Indeed there is potential saviour known as server less technology.
Serverless computing is all about giving the responsibility of server management to the cloud provider.
This beautiful explanation triggered in my mind an imagination of whole new possibility in business computing. It is going to touch heart of enormous number of business.
Noticing this excitement in me, my friend suggested me to attend first ever Serverless summit(http://inserverless.com). I felt lucky!!
It was a full day exciting session. Session started with intuitive way of explaining this new revolution.
There was a nice demo based on real-life use-case. In fact, companies are already deploying their chatbot using this technology.
Followed to this, there was a worthwhile session on best practices from John Wills, author of DevOps Handbook.
The Ocean of exciting information was shared through out day. Food was delicious and this allowed my body and mind both to be dedicated in this summit. Lunch time discussion was so cool that we missed first reminder to join for post-lunch session :)
To bring back our intellectual energy (post lunch), organisers had well thought of an interesting game on the theme of devops.
I also liked varieties of speakers covering various aspect. Open source project, kubernetes, AWS , Azure, IOT, block-chain, AI areas were touched.
The summit ended with a nice panel discussion which focussed on giving insight of strengths, challenges in this technology.
And the happy ending :)
Although event was over, however my curiosity saw a new day :) I started thinking of businesses which will get benefitted. I could imagine use-cases of supply chain management business, technical support/customer care. And now, this list of use-cases have become bigger and keeps on growing....
