Moving Beyond Cultural Competency: Cultural Humility

Earlier this year we shared some thinking in regards to implicit bias and cultural competency. This month's habit and disposition, be a learner and curiosity, lend themselves to our taking a deeper dive into cultural competency and what that means for us as educators. Now, more than ever, we need to be aware of who we are, who our students are, and what those two discoveries mean for our daily work. But is this enough?

Cultural humility takes this knowledge a step further by helping us to recognize that this learning never ends. Our work of learning about cultures other than our own is never done because it's impossible to have adequate knowledge about cultures other than one's own.
