German Programs Taught in English:

To get you started you will want to search for program that are taught in English. I suggest you start with the DAAD or the Study in Germany search engine that includes the public University programs. It is a good idea to search for the courses that you want to study in English as most Universities only offer specific subjects where English is the language of instruction.

There are Private Universities like Jacobs University in Bremen or Bard College in Berlin. These tend to have some of the high requirements of the state run universities. As an example Math Studies is not accepted by state run Universities, but might be accepted by the Private Universities depending on the program you are applying to. They generally do have tuition fees, as well as the cost for room and board.

The state run Universities, sometimes teach specific course subject in English. Again these are best found using the above search engines. For programs like these students must meet the requirements of the German Government, in regards to language ability and courses taken. At a minimum students will need to have maths at an SL or HL level, studies is NOT acceptable for Germany, and students need to have either HL Science or HL Maths. Often students will need to take German courses once attending and reach an A1 proficiency by the end of the first semester or year depending on the program requirements. For more information click here for the IB website and information about how Germany views an IB Diploma. An example of a program might be the University of Magdeburg (Management and Economics). The requirements are more challenging but generally the tuition is free. A student still needs to cover fees and living costs.

For some course you would need to apply via Uni-Assist. Uni Assist helps to translate your documents and compares them to the equivalent requirements.

The first step should always be to:

  • Contact the University about the application requirements and criteria including dates and deadlines.

  • Find out what forms and documents you need, and how should they get them to you. (Snail Mail, Email, or online application)

  • If you are using Uni-Assist please note that this process takes time and you are recommended to have the applications in a minimum of 8 weeks before the final due date for the applications.
