Requirements vs Offers

Requirements for Programs

The minimum scores needed to be academically sucessfull in the course, as determined by the University can be found on UCAS and on the University websites and prospectuses. It is encouraged that you check all of these three spaces and let your School Counselor know if you find a discrepancy so they can bring this to the attention of the University.

That being said the Minimum scores are just that-- a minimum. In other words, if you have above this the Universities will look at your application, and then make an assessment. One of the pieces that they look at is the number of applications for the course in that year group. In courses that are highly competitive, with lots of applications, you may not receive an offer if you meet their minimum. In these courses, often your letter of recommendation and personal statement are given more weight, and some courses just raise the bar to match the level of candidates who have applied.

Offers

As an example in 2023 on UCAS a student received an offer for BioChem at Imperial University in London.

This year the course minimum was listed as: "Our minimum entry standard is 38 points overall, to include: 6 in Chemistry at higher level 6 in Biology, Mathematics* or Physics at higher level *Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or the Applications and Interpretation syllabi will be accepted at higher level with no preference."

The students offer was for "International Baccalaureate Diploma 45 points overall 7 in Chemistry 7 in Biology both at Higher Level."

It may also be the case that Universities choose to make an offer for what the student is predicted at. So this is a warning to all students to not beg for your predicted scores to be elevated just so you will receive an offer. Several UK Universities tend to make 'at-prediction' offers.

Failing to meet these scores means that the offer is no longer valid.
