PLO Attended:

  • Special Education Liaison Meetings - District 6

Coached by:

  • Wendy Driesman

PLO Goals:

The goal of this training was to learn multi-sensory strategies to support struggling readers.

PLO Learnings:

Multi-sensory strategies such as phonological awareness, syllabication, student assessment, fluency and strategies for reading, writing, and spelling.

Rationale:

Struggling readers have benefited from phonics instruction and guided reading support. However, this particular program enabled a more structured systematic approach to explicit instructional strategies.

Impact:

Students are now able to receive instruction tailored to their specific needs. Learners participating in this program learned techniques to enable them to independently decode at increased levels. This allowed the students to focus more cognitive energy on comprehension. Student self-confidence increased as did their enjoyment of reading. Breakthroughs were noted with 1st, 2nd and 4th grade learners. As a teacher, I felt a great sense of empowerment in being able to support my students and grow their reading skills in measurable ways.

Next Steps:

 Ensure that the level of expertise continues to grow.

 Continue to deliver the targeted instructional IMSE strategies.

 Involve more students in the program.

 Share some of the techniques with other staff members.
