Year 5-6
Term 4 Update
Kia ora koutou! Welcome Back
We were truly looking forward to welcoming the Year 5 and 6 learners back on-site at the start of Term 4, however due to the current alert levels, we once again resume distance learning with the hope to be back on-site soon.
We thank each and every family for your support during this time. We know juggling working from home and caring for your whānau comes with different challenges.
The Year 5 - 6 teachers grow increasingly impressed with our learners daily. Their determination, creativity and positive energy makes learning fun for everyone.
Term 4 Concept - Phenomena
The concept for term 4 is Phenomena: a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question.
Through this concept we will be thinking scientifically to question and explore the living world, exploring animals and living things and how they interact with each other and the environment.
Learners will:
Explore and ask questions about the world around them.
Think critically and deeply about their world.
Think of problems that affect them that they would like to find solutions for.
Interpret data and research methodically and understand anomalies.
Present and justify their findings, determine further questions.
Hubs 10 & 11
Akomanga tekau and akomanga tekau-ma-tahi are absolutely fanatic about phenomena!
Throughout Term 4, we are going to be exploring 'What Happens If...?'
From the darkest depths of space, to the wonders of the animal kingdom, we will explore a range of 'What Happens If...' scenarios which will inspire imaginations, spark curiosity and encourage problem solving skills in a range of contexts; igniting a passion for science and allowing learners to see science alive in their everyday lives. We will be looking at what steps we can take, and how science will help us solve these scenarios.
We cannot wait to see where the learners take us on this incredible journey!
Hub 12
Hub 12 are moving from the desert to deep underground...
Evolution has played a great role in helping humans adapt and survive on Earth. In the year 2,256, Earth is nothing but a dried-out desert land. To escape the heat some humans fled deep underground. Years of living underground has witnessed them change into something else....
Our question we will be investigating is how have the underground people evolved/ adapted to survive?
To investigate this provocation we will be exploring animals that live underground and how they have adapted, we will be conducting a range of experiments to test different hypothesis, and we will be creating a fantasy/science fiction narrative about the underground people.
We would like to introduce student teachers Michelle Taylor, Nicola Shearer and Ally van Rossem who are have been teaching within Year 5 and 6 during term 3 and continuing into term 4.
