It is awesome to see everyone back after the break. It is amazing how much taller everyone seems to be after just two weeks away! The hubs are already bubbling with excitement as we build on the fantastic first term and dive into our learning for Term 2.
Our concept theme Diversity is centred around engaging with diverse ideas and perspectives and making personal connections.
Though the concept, learners will seek out, engage and empathise with other people’s ideas and perspectives, they will make connections and make sense of the world through their unique worldview, identity and/or hauora.
Hub 10 will start building knowledge about diversity by exploring why we are the way we are. We will be reflecting on our own personalities, opinions, perspectives and the way we act/react to different situations. We will then begin to develop ideas about why/how/what has shaped us to be that way by looking into the science of nature vs nurture.
From this, we will focus on demonstrating empathy for others by understanding that people act/react differently to us and exploring how to respond appropriately in different situations.
We will also be encouraging learners to think about ways they could positively influence others by looking at kiwis who have made a change in their communities and considering ways they could positively influence others around our school.
Throughout Term 2, Hub 11 will be building knowledge around diversity We will explore why we are the way we are. We will be reflecting on our own personalities, opinions, perspectives and the way we act/react to different situations. We will continue to develop ideas about why/how/what has shaped us to be that way by researching the science of nature vs nurture.
This will lead us to focus on demonstrating empathy for others by understanding that people act or react differently to based on their own life experiences. This will give us the ability to understand how best to respond in different situations.
We will be encouraging learners to reflect on ways they could positively influence others by looking at New Zealanders who have created change in their communities. Finally, we will consider ways we could positively influence others in and around our school.
Hub 12 will start building knowledge about diversity through first exploring themselves, their values and beliefs.
We will use the novel Wonder by R.J Palacio to seek perspectives and engage and empathise with others.
Student voice shows learners are interested in the social divide between men and women. To explore this further we will notice how gender stereotypes and expectations exist in their everyday lives and how they affect their sense of identity and self. some of the activities we are preparing include:
comparing ‘boy’ toys and ‘girl’ toys,
noticing and analysing stereotypes around different jobs and careers,
exploring representation in the media.
The Learner Led Conferences happen during term 2.
