Update 16

25th November 2021

Kia ora e te whānau

Tēnā Koutou Katoa,

It has been absolutely wonderful seeing so many of our learners back at school over the past week!

We've been so impressed with how smoothly everyone has transitioned back to School in their various School A, B, C and D groupings; our learners have shown us once again just how resilient, confident and positive they are, and we couldn't be prouder. The vibe around the school has been nothing short of incredible! Schools sure are special places when they have kids in them.

You may have missed the videos shared over the last week sharing some of the learners highlights about being back at School. We wanted you to see for yoursleves what getting back to School has been like given your kids are being dropped off at the gate.

School B, C, D - We're Back

School A, C, D - School A is back too!

Virtual Learning Achievement Celebration - Hats off to you!

COVID-19 has certainly taught us to be flexible and adapt. We were determined to have our annual Learning Achievement Celebration go ahead this year. Given the uncertainty we experienced regarding gatherings some weeks ago, we decided to take this special event online.

Many of your children have been submitting content onto the distance learning padlets, which has been woven into some special and memorable items that will be shared throughout the Virtual Achievement Celebration.

We will be emailing you a link to the pre recorded VAC at 4pm on Friday, December 10. We encourage you to get involved; dress up, pop on your favourite hat and join us as we take our hats off together to celebrate your children's performances and achievements!

Along with the VAC link, we will also share a link to a padlet. We ask that you share a photo of your family enjoying the VAC together with your hats on. You might even capture the surprising moment when your child's name is mentioned as a nominee or award recipient! We would love to see these shared from 4 - 5pm.

We look forward to celebrating this special 'Hat's off to you' event with you!

Community Survey Data: A message from the Board

Stonefields School values the community survey responses received. We truly appreciate your feedback as this guides our decision making to ensure that we continually strive to improve outcomes for our learners and our school community. Significant effort has gone into analysing the feedback received, and we are pleased to be able to share our survey findings with you.

Year 7 and 8 Uniform Decision

We are very excited to share with you that our Uniform Re-design team has come to a decision on the new Year 7 & 8 uniforms!

After a thorough process of information gathering, and several rounds of feedback, we have landed on the black polo shirt, with a blue side panel. We expect to have information on pricing and a timeline for rollout out to you soon.

We can't wait to see our senior learners rocking their new uniforms with pride in 2022 - in the meantime, here's a little sneak peek:

Library Book, Readers & Borrowed Devices

As we are fast approaching the end of the school year we ask that any borrowed school property, including Library Books, Readers and any iPads/"lockdown devices" be returned to the school as soon as possible. We are doing a full stocktake, and require any outstanding items back by Monday December 6th.

  • School devices (iPads) are to be returned to your child's Bubble Teacher

  • We have set up collection boxes outside of the office for Library Books and Readers, to enable your child to safely and easily drop off outstanding items when they are onsite.

Manaiakalani Devices for 2022

As technology continues to evolve and advance, we want to ensure that we continue to provide our learners and their whānau with up-to-date device option that offers value for money and durability. The Manaiakalani Education Trust continually and closely monitors the market so we can be confident that our selected device is up to the task. We are waiting to receive the details on the selected device for 2022 by the end of the week, and will reach out to those families with children who will need to purchase devices:

  • If you have a child moving to year 3 next year, you will receive detailed information on purchasing a new device.

  • Those with children moving to year 7 in 2022 will receive information on purchasing a replacement device, as the expected life of a device is 3 years.

We are very proud to be members of Manaiakalani, and we strongly encourage and highly recommend all our families with learners in year 3 and above to participate in the Chromebook scheme through our device providers, the Manaiakalani Education Trust. We ask that you please hold off on purchasing devices until you have received the information outlined above.

Te Pātaka Ako | Community Hub

Yesterday, we had a very timely and informative presentation led by Jemila Chadwick, an educational psychologist with the Ministry of Education.

Jemila talked about stress and introduced the concept of the stress bucket. The stress bucket analogy can be used to help people measure their stress tolerance – what fills a person’s stress bucket, how you can identify when your bucket is overflowing and how you release ‘water’ (stress) from your bucket. She also talked about The Pareto principle, also known as the 80:20 rule. The Pareto principle states that for many outcomes, roughly 80% of consequences come from 20% of causes. At the end of the presentation, Jemila took the audience through a mindfulness exercise which many found very relaxing.

Here is the link to the video for this exercise which is targeted at children, but is great for adults too.

Jemila’s presentation, a stress level activity for teenagers and adults, and other useful resources and web links can be accessed here.

Wellbeing Workshop: Noticing and Responding to Worries

As we try to adjust and gain back some more “normality” in light of COVID-19, children will also be trying to make sense of what is going on around them. During uncertain times in particular, we might notice changes in our child’s behaviour, and with their emotional responses. We might even notice an increased level of anxiety or more “worry talk” happening as well.

Together we will explore how to notice worries or changes in your child’s behaviour, and some helpful ways to respond.
