Dear Family and Whānau,
What an awesome first term we had, filled with exciting learning opportunities focused around kaitiakitanga.
All of our learners were deeply engaged and did a fantastic job of sharing their thinking throughout the term. They grew in their understanding of what it means to be a 'kaitiaki kid' and we enjoyed seeing them taking greater ownership of their possessions in the hubs. They also did an amazing job of demonstrating leadership outside, by respecting the spaces outside of the hub.
A big thank you to all the whānau who came and helped us with sewing our pencil cases. It was fantastic to have many of you in the hub, learning alongside the teachers and learners. We really appreciate your assistance and look forward to having many of you in this coming term also.
We hope you enjoy this update and look forward to seeing you in the hubs soon.
This term we will be exploring the concept of ‘diversity’ through a cultural lens, as we celebrate our rerekētanga (differences) and how this brings us together as one (kōtahitanga).
Through quality collaboration and deep thinking we will be delving into what it means and why it is important to celebrate and respect different cultures. Throughout the term, we hope to build the learners’ knowledge about cultural diversity within our year group. We hope to celebrate all the different cultures through art, dance, cultural dress, food and any special holidays and traditions through a Cultural Day on Thursday 8th July (Week 10),
Please complete the Google form if you wish to help in any way. We hope to have a timetable drawn up by the end of week 1, term 2 and will be in contact with you as soon as possible.
Building basic knowledge is a real focus for us this year. We hope to reinforce this knowledge through explicit teaching, regular learning opportunities as well as the use of digital tools and resources.
In order to reinforce this learning we hope that children not only engage in activities at school but at home too. We encourage you to support your child's learning at home by visiting the following sites:
Literacy - Get Epic
Spelling: Using the spelling menu to practice spelling words
Numeracy - Basic facts
Please check our school home learning website for more details.
The Learner Led Conferences will take place on Thursday 27th May.
This is an opportunity for you to be led by your child to understand what they are learning, how they are going and what their next learning steps are. During the 60 minute learner led conference, a hub teacher will have 10 minutes to share your child's progress update with you.
More information and how to book has been shared in the latest communication update.
Jumpers and Shoes
As the weather is changing, this is a great time to check that jumpers are clearly labelled to avoid them getting lost. We are also encouraging shoes to be labelled or have something unique on them as we have many learners take off and misplace their shoes during the day.
Book BagsReaders and spelling notebooks need to come to school each day in a book bag. The book bag is important in order to protect our school readers. We follow a "no book bag , no book' policy. All books are to be returned each week. Book bags are available for purchase at the school office.
Any spare time you have no matter how little would be greatly appreciated. We would love help with a number of tasks including - Putting reading books away, listening to learners read, photocopying, laminating, pencil-sharpening etc. If you are able to come in before or during, Monday - Friday that would be great. It does not have to be every week, every little bit helps. Please talk to a hub teacher if you are able to help.
Thank you again for all of your support last term.
