Testing Ram or Memory
Step 1: Visual inspect RAM for value.
1. Laptop - DDR3 8GB So-Dimm minimum
DDR4 4GB So-Dimm minimum
DDR5 all
2. Desktop - DDR3 8GB Dimm minimum
DDR4 4GB Dimm minimum
DDR5 all
3. Server - DDR3 16GB Dimm minimum
DDR4 8GB minimum
DDR5 all
Step 2: Visual inspect RAM.
1. Inspect to see if the RAM is not damaged.
1. Check for missing chips, capacitors, or resistors
2. Check for damages on pins.
Step 3: Install RAM
1. Install one RAM stick into a compatible PC, Laptop, or Server.
2. Power on the unit. If the unit does not turn on or makes a beeping alarm then memory is bad. Scrap unit.
3. If the unit is able to power on and you are able to boot to bios dependable on the make and model of the unit. Utilize the internet to find out what keys are for bios boot up.
Step 4: Access computer Bios (Basic Input Output System).
To access the BIOS, you must press one of the “F” keys (such as F1-F12), Esc, or Del buttons depending on the model of the motherboard after you hit the power button. These should be:
§ F1 for Lenovo, IBM
§ F2 for Dell, ASUS, Samsung, Acer
§ ESC for HP
Step 4: Run self test built in if available for the testing unit.
Step 5: If you fail, scrap memory.
Step 6: Shut down computer, server, or laptop before removing or installing the RAM.
