Music Notes

By: Ashley Sosis

Two weeks ago, I showed a side-by-side comparison of the Book of Common Prayer translation of Psalm 103 and the James Montgomery paraphrase that appears as hymn 411 in our hymnal. Today’s opening hymn (and the basis for all of my solo organ pieces today) is #410 Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, whose text is also a paraphrase Psalm 103 by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847). If I didn’t tell you (and there were no credits at the bottom of the hymn) would you ever know that they had the same scripture source?

Hymn #410 Psalm 103, BCP

1 Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven; 1 Bless the LORD, O my soul,*

to His feet thy tribute bring. all that is within me, bless his holy Name.

Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, 3 He forgives all your sins*

evermore His praises sing: and heals all your infirmities;

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

2 Praise Him for His grace and favor 4 He redeems your life from the grave*

to our fathers in distress. and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness;

Praise Him still the same as ever, 5 The LORD executes righteousness*

slow to chide, and swift to bless. and judgment for all who are oppressed.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

3 Fatherlike He tends and spares us; 13 As a father cares for his children,*

well our feeble frame He knows. so does the LORD care for those who fear him.

In His hands He gently bears us, 14 For he himself knows whereof we are made;*

rescues us from all our foes. He remembers that we are but dust.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

4 Frail as summer's flow'r we flourish, 15 Our days are like the grass;*

blows the wind and it is gone; we flourish like a flower of the field;

but while mortals rise and perish, 17 But the merciful goodness of the LORD

God endures unchanging on. endures for ever on those who fear him.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.

5 Angels, help us to adore Him; 20 Bless the LORD, you angels of his,

ye behold Him face to face; you mighty ones who do his bidding,

saints triumphant, bow down before Him, and hearken to the voice of his word.

gathered in from ev'ry race. 21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts!

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise the everlasting King.
