Music Notes

By: Ashley Sosis

Today’s lovely Communion anthem has the inscription, “Dedicated to the glory of God for the Anglican Celebration Choir Combined choirs from the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina Festival of Churches, Piccolo Spoleto, Charleston, SC, June 5th, 1999.”

The text comes from The book of Hours, 1514, and is similar to the ancient (390-461 A.D.) prayer popularly called “St. Patrick’s Breastplate”. We like to sing this prayer in Hymn 370, “I bind unto myself today,” on Trinity Sunday. I find this prayer to be a fun memory challenge for young Christians.

“Christ be with me, Christ be within me,

Christ behind me, Christ before me,

Christ beside me, Christ to win me,

Christ to comfort me and restore me.

Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all who love me

Christ in mouth of friend or stranger.”
