Communion Anthem: Draw us in the Spirit’s Tether, By: William Friedell

Choir: Draw us in the Spirit’s tether;

for when humbly, in thy name,

Two of three are met together,

Thou art in the midst of them;

Alleluya! Alleluya! Touch we now thy garment’s hem.

As the brethren used to gather

in the name of Christ to sup,

Then with thanks to God the Father

break the bread and bless the cup,

Alleluya! Alleluya! So knit thou our friendship up.

All our meals and all our living

make as sacraments of thee,

That by caring, helping, giving,

we may true disciples be,

Alleluya! Alleluya! We will serve Thee faithfully.

Music Notes, By: Ashley Sosis

This Sunday’s music includes choral anthems by C. Armstrong Gibbs, and Harold W. Friedell.

C. Armstrong Gibbs (1889-1960), was a versatile and prolific British composer, who learned from and taught alongside famous composers Charles Wood and R. Vaughan Williams, though his compositions remain unfairly neglected. He abbreviated or dropped his first name Cecil entirely from his compositions because he disliked it. If you would like to spend some time appreciating Gibbs’ underappreciated music, listen to his Symphony No. 3 “Westmorland”, written in memory of his son who was killed in action during WWII.

Harold W. Friedell (1905-1958) was an American organist, choirmaster, teacher and composer. He began his career as an organist at an early age and continued to serve churches and teach in New York and New Jersey the rest of his short life. He taught on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary School of Sacred Music in New York City. As a composer, Friedell composed works for organ, orchestra, and choir, as well as hymn tunes, descants, and music for solo voice. Today’s anthem by Harold W. Friedell is so famous that a version is printed in hymnals as the hymn tune “Union Seminary”. According to a colleague who interviewed Friedell’s son for a scholarly paper, the Friedells pronounce their name “Freh-dell”, not “Free-dell” as the German spelling would suggest.
