Last week we looked at the text of an Isaac Watts poem and its parallel text from the book of Psalms. This week’s service includes text by George Herbert, “The Call”. A beautiful prayer of invocation, it uses simple language to suggest profound ideas. I am pairing the text below with a “bible treasure hunt”. The citations below are my best effort. Bible scholars, if you can think of others, please share them with me after the service (I’m at the organ).

Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life: John 14:6, John 3:16-17, Psalm 18:30

Such a Way as gives us breath: Acts 17:24-27, Proverbs 10:29, 2 Samuel 22:31

Such a Truth, as ends all strife: 1 Corinthians 15:51-56, Colossians 2:13-15, Philippians 3:8

Such a Life, as killeth death. Romans 6:9-11, 1 Corinthians 15:20, Galatians 2:20

Come, my Light, my Feast, my Strength: Psalm 27:1, John 6:35-58, 2 Corinthians 12:9

Such a Light, as shows a feast: John 8:12, Matthew 5:16, Mark 2:15-17

Such a Feast as mends in length: Colossians 2:9, John 2:9-11, Matthew 26:26-29

Such a Strength, as makes his guest. Zephaniah 3:17, Philippians 4:13, Matthew 19:25-26

Come, my Joy, my Love, my Heart: John 15:4-17, Philippians 2:1-2, 1 John 4:7

Such a Joy as none can move: Hebrews 12:11-13, John 16:20-22, Romans 8:37-39

Such a Love as none can part: 2 Timothy 1:7, 1 Corinthians 13:8-13, Romans 5:8

Such a Heart, as joys in Love. Matthew 5:43-48, Ephesians 4:1-3, 1 John 3:16-18
