Organ Prelude: Canzona in D Minor by: J. S. Bach (1685-1750)

Processional Hymn: 458 My Song Is Love Unknown

Gloria: S280 Powell

Gospel Hymn: 493 O For A Thousand Tongues to Sing

Offertory Anthem: O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High Music: “The Agincourt Carol”, England c. 1415; Arranged by: E. Power Biggs (1906-1977); Descant by: Ashley Sosis

1. O Love, how deep, how broad, how high,

How passing thought and fantasy,

That God, the Son of God, should take

Our mortal form for mortals’ sake.

2. For us baptized, for us He bore

His holy fast and hungered sore;

For us temptations sharp He knew,

For us the tempter overthrew.

3. For us to evil power betrayed,

Scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed,

He bore the shameful cross and death,

For us gave up his dying breath.

4. For us He rose from death again;

For us He went on high to reign;

For us He sent the Spirit here

To guide, to strengthen, and to cheer.

5. All glory to our Lord and God

For love so deep, so high, so broad:

The Trinity whom we adore

Forever and forever more.

Communion Anthem: In the Cross of Christ I Glory by: Ithamar Conkey (1815-1867)

1. In the cross of Christ I glory,

Towering o’er the wrecks of time;

All the light of sacred story

Gathers round its head sublime.

2. When the woes of life o’ertake me,

Hopes deceive, and fears annoy,

Never shall the cross forsake me:

Lo! it glows with peace and joy.

3. When the sun of bliss is beaming

Light and love upon my way,

From the cross the radiance streaming

Adds more luster to the day.

4. Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure,

By the cross are sanctified;

Peace is there that knows no measure,

Joys that through all time abide.

Organ Communion Meditation: Aspiration By: John E. West(1863-1929)

Music Notes by: Ashley Sosis

The hymn, “O Love, How Deep, How Broad, How High” is found in the Hymnal 1982 with two different tunes. Hymn number four hundred and forty-eight uses the tune “Deus Tuorum Militum” and the hymn that appears next to it uses the tune “Deo Gracias”. These two tunes are very different sounding! The older tune of the two, “Deo Gracias” was borrowed from an English Ballad, “The Agincourt Carol”. The original words to “The Agincourt Carol” recounted the 1415 Battle of Agincourt, recalling the success of the British Army over the French in Normandy (Agincourt), “Our king went forth to Normandy, with grace and might of chivalry.” The intensity of the music lends itself well to the “O Love, How Deep…” hymn text, especially the stanzas recounting of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross for us. Can you think of any other hymns that you can sing with a different tune? You might discover a new, beautiful and meaningful pairing!
