Offertory Anthem: “At the Cry of the First Bird”,By: David W. Guion, Anna Grace Jordan, Soloist

Choir: At the cry of the first bird

They began to crucify Thee,

O cheek like a swan!

It was not right ever to cease lamenting.

It was like the parting of day from night.

Ah! though sore the suffering

Put upon the body of Mary’s son,

Sorer to Him was the grief

That was upon her for His sake.

At the cry of the first bird...

Communion Anthem: Lord Jesus, Think on me, Tune: SOUTHWELL, setting by Richard Kenneth Fitzgerald

Choir: Lord Jesus, think on me

And purge away my sin;

From earth-born passions set me free

And make me pure within.

Lord Jesus, think on me,

Amid the battle’s strife;

In all my pain and misery

Be Thou my Heath and Life.

Lord Jesus, think on me,

Nor let me go astray;

Through darkness and perplexity

Point Thou the heav’nly way.

Lord Jesus, think on me,

That I may sing above

To Father, Spirit, and to Thee

The strains of praise and love.

Communion Meditation: Lord Christ, when first Thou cam’st to earth, setting by: Alec Wyton

Music Notes

By: Ashley Sosis

The striking communion anthem, “Lord Jesus, Think on Me” connects four different centuries. Synesius of Cyrene (c. 375-430) wrote the original Greek text of the prayer “Lord Jesus, think on me”. It was translated by Allen W. Chatfield (1808-1896) into the rhyming, English version you may read above. The music, the tune “SOUTHWELL” was written by Daman, single-named Italian composer, (c.1540-1591) and arranged by Richard Kenneth Fitzgerald in 2004. The open fifths and fourths in the choral harmony remind me of American colonial era hymns. This beautiful passing down of text and melody is like the church itself, both at once old and ever new!
