Music Notes

By: Ashley Sosis

Gerald Near (b. 1942) published two sets of 10 chorale preludes in 1995, including the brilliant #10. Puer Nobis Nascitur of the second set. In the 1982 hymnal, the tune “Puer Nobis Nascitur” appears with hymn texts for Epiphany, “What star is this, with beams so bright”; and Easter, “That Easter day with joy was bright”. It also appears as a hymn for general use, “O splendor of God’s glory bright” in many hymnals, making this setting of “Puer Nobis Nascitur” a truly all-purpose little postlude.
