Music Notes

By: Ashley Sosis

So many celebrated composers and arrangers of choral music are no longer with us, and of those, a good portion did not see acclaim during their lifetime. Alice Parker, the arranger of our offertory anthem, is not one of those unfortunate ones. If you have ever sung in a choir, chances are you have a favorite Alice Parker arrangement stuck in your head right now (mine is “I Got Shoes”). At 89, she’s still doing concerts and community sings all around the country.

Alice Parker’s 90th birthday is coming up and her fans have put together a project called “Alice Parker is 90”. The project is a challenge to professional choirs (I’M TALKING TO YOU, CAROLINA MASTER CHORALE) to post performances of her music on facebook (https://www.facebook.com/melodiousaccord) and twitter (@melodiousaccord, #aliceparkeris90) between December 2015 and December 2016 as a birthday gift. Happy Birthday, Alice!
