Gloria: S280, Powell

First Reading: Exodus 24:12-18

Psalm: Psalm 99, Setting by: Stephen Elvey

Choir: 1 The Lord is King;

let the people tremble; *

he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake.

2 The Lord is great in Zion; *

he is high above all peoples.

3 Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; *

he is the Holy One.

4 "O mighty King, lover of justice,

you have established equity; *

you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob."

5 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God

and fall down before his footstool; *

he is the Holy One.

6 Moses and Aaron among his priests,

and Samuel among those who call upon his Name,*

they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.

7 He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; *

they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.

8 O Lord our God, you answered them indeed; *

you were a God who forgave them,

yet punished them for their evil deeds.

9 Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God

and worship him upon his holy hill; *

for the Lord our God is the Holy One.

Offertory Anthem: O thou the central orb, by: Charles Wood

Choir: O Thou the central orb of righteous love, Pure beam of the most High, eternal Light Of this our wintry world, Thy radiance bright Awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above.

Come, quickly come, and let Thy glory shine, Gilding our darksome heaven with rays Divine. Thy saints with holy lustre round Thee move, As stars about Thy throne, set in the height Of God’s ordaining counsel, as Thy sight Gives measur’d grace to each, Thy power to prove.

Let Thy bright beams disperse the gloom of sin, Our nature all shall feel eternal day, in fellowship with Thee, transforming day to souls erewhile unclean, now pure within. Amen.

Today’s anthems and hymns are centered around the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1-9). A few of those selections are meditations on the “Light” mentioned in verse 2 of that passage, “2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.

Here are a sampling of a few beautiful lines of prayers and poetry on that theme of “Jesus is our light” from today’s service. From our communion hymn, “Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight, and all the twinkling, starry host: Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer, than all the angels heaven can boast.” And from today’s Offertory anthem, “Pure beam of the most High, eternal light of this our wintry world, Thy radiance bright awakes new joy in faith, hope soars above.” And from today’s collect, “Grant unto us that we, beholding by baith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory.”
