I have used quite a few of these articles to tell you about the Minister, Theologian, Logician, and Hymn-writer Isaac Watts (1674-1748). The best way to describe how gifted of a poet is to share one of his metrical psalms and today’s liturgy gives us a good excuse to do so—Psalm 146 is today’s psalm and “I’ll praise my maker while I’ve breath” is today’s Gospel Hymn. Below, Watts’ version is on the left and the psalm is on the right. I hope you enjoy his clever treatment of each verse! Here’s a summer project-- why don’t you turn a Psalm into a poem?

WATTS PSALM 146

1. I'll praise my Maker with my breath, 1. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, O my soul! *

And when my voice is lost in death, I will praise the Lord as long as I live;

Praise shall employ my nobler powers. I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.

My days of praise shall ne'er be past,

While life, and thought, and being last,

Or immortality endures.

2. Why should I make a man my trust? 2 Put not your trust in rulers,

Princes must die and turn to dust; nor in any child of earth, *

Vain is the help of flesh and blood: for there is no help in them.

Their breath departs,

their pomp, and power, 3 When they breathe their last,

And thoughts, all vanish in an hour, they return to earth, *

Nor can they make their promise good. and in that day their thoughts perish.

3. Happy the man whose hopes rely 4 Happy are they who have

On Israel's God: he made the sky, the God of Jacob for their help! *

And earth, and seas, with all their train: whose hope is in the Lord their God;

His truth for ever stands secure; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas,

He saves th' oppressed, and all that is in them; *

he feeds the poor, who keeps his promise for ever;

And none shall find his promise vain. 6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed,*

and food to those who hunger.

4. The Lord hath eyes to give the blind; 7 The Lord sets the prisoners free;

The Lord supports the sinking mind; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind; *

He sends the lab'ring conscience peace; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;

He helps the stranger in distress, 8 The Lord loves the righteous;

The widow and the fatherless, the Lord cares for the stranger; *

And grants the prisioner sweet release. he sustains the orphan and widow…

5. He loves his saints, he knows them well, …but frustrates the way of the wicked.

But turns the wicked down to hell;

Thy God, O Zion! ever reigns: 9 The Lord shall reign for ever, *

Let every tongue, let every age, your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.

In this exalted work engage; Hallelujah!

Praise him in everlasting strains.
