11am Choral Eucharist, Sunday, February 11th

Last Sunday after Epiphany

Themes from the Readings: Nothing can separate us from the love of God; the Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want; Jesus feeds the five thousand, for they were like, “sheep without a shepherd”.

Prelude: Brother James’ Air, By: Searle Wright

Processional Hymn: 447 The Christ who died but rose again (St. Magnus)

Gloria: S280, Powell

First Reading: Romans 8:31-39

Psalm: Psalm 23, Setting by: C. Hylton Stewart

Choir: 1. The Lord is my Shepherd,

therefore can I lack nothing.

2. He shall feed me in a green pasture

and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.

3. He shall convert my soul,

and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness

for his Name’s sake.

4. Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,

for thou art with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me.

5. Thou shalt prepare a table before me,

against them that trouble me,

thou hast anointed my head with oil,

and my cup shall be full.

6. But thy lovingkindness and mercy shall follow me,

all the days of my life,

and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Gospel Hymn: 343 Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless (St. Agnes)

Gospel: Mark 6:30-44

Offertory Anthem: The Lord’s My Shepherd, By: Carol F. Mueller

Choir: The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want, He makes me down to lie

In pastures green. He leadeth me the quiet waters by.

My soul He doth restore again, and me to walk doth make

Within the paths of righteousness, e’en for His own Name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale, yet will I fear none ill;

For Thou art with me, and thy rod and staff me comfort still.

My table Thou hast furnished in presence of my foes;

My head with oil Thou dost anoint, and my cup overflows.

Goodness and mercy all my days will surely follow me;

And in my Father’s heart always my dwelling place shall be. Amen.

Doxology: Hymn 380, stanza 3

Holy: S125, Proulx

Communion Meditation: Trio on “O worship the King, all glorious above”, by: Joseph Clokey

Communion Anthem: My Shepherd will Supply My Need, Arranged by: Virgil Thompson

Choir: My Shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his Name.

In pastures fresh he makes me feed beside the living stream.

He brings my wand’ring spirit back when I forsake his ways.

He leads me for his mercy’s sake in paths of truth and grace.

When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay.

One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away,

Thy hand, in sight of all my foes doth still my table spread.

My cup with blessings overflows, thine oil anoints my head.

The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days,

O may thy house be my abode and all my work be praise.

There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come,

No more a stranger or a guest, but like a child at home.

Processional Hymn: 388 O worship the King, all glorious above!

Postlude: Canon on “O worship the King, all glorious above”, By: Healey Willan

Music Notes By: Ashley Sosis

Here are all three versions of the23rd Psalm we sang today: the 1928 prayerbook version, the 1650 Scottish Psalter version and the Isaac Watts version. Watts’ masterful setting really stands out , doesn’t it?

Verse 1

1928: “The Lord is my Shepherd, therefore I lack nothing”

1650: “The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want”

Watts: “My Shepherd will supply my need, Jehovah is his Name.”

Verse 2

1928: “He shall feed me in a green pasture

and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.”

1650: “He makes me down to lie in pastures green;

He leadeth me the quiet waters by.”

Watts: “In pastures fresh he makes me feed

Beside the living stream.”

Verse 3

1928: “He shall convert my soul, and bring me forth

in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake.”

1650: “My soul he doth restore again; and me to walk doth make

Within the paths of righteousness, even for His own Name’s sake.”

Watts: “He brings my wand’ring spirit back when I forsake his ways.

He leads me for his mercy’s sake in paths of truth and grace.”

Verse 4

1928: “Yea, thou I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil, for thou art with me,

Thy rod and thy staff comfort me.”

For Thou art with me; and Thy rod and staff me comfort still.”

Watts: “When I walk through the shades of death, thy presence is my stay.

One word of thy supporting breath drives all my fears away.”
