Offertory Anthem: Now Greet the Swiftly Changing Year, by: Alfred Fedak
Now greet the swiftly changing year
With joy and penitence sincere.
Rejoice! Rejoice! With thanks embrace
Another year of grace.
This Jesus came to end sin’s war;
This name of names for us he bore.
Rejoice! Rejoice! With thanks embrace
Another year of grace.
His love abundant far exceeds
The volume of a whole year’s needs.
Rejoice! Rejoice! With thanks embrace
Another year of grace.
With him as Lord to lead our way
In want and in prosperity,
What need we fear in earth or space
In this new year of grace!
“All glory be to God on high,
And peace on earth!” the angels cry,
Rejoice, rejoice! With thanks embrace
Another year of grace.

Communion Anthem: When Jesus Went to Jordan’s Stream
When Jesus went to Jordan’s stream
His Father’s will obeying,
And was baptized by John,
There came a voice from heaven saying,
“This is my dear beloved Son
Upon whom rests my favor.”
And till God’s will is fully done
He will not bend or waver,
For He is Christ the Savior.
The Holy Spirit then was shown,
A Dove on him descending;
The Triune God is thus made known
In Christ as love unending.
He taught, he healed, he raised the dead,
Yet, in his great endeavor
To save us, his own blood was shed;
But death could hold him never.
He rose, and lives forever.
He came by water and by blood,
To heal our lost condition;
He cleanses, reconciles to God,
And gives the Great Commission.
Then let us not heed worldly lies
Nor rest upon our merit,
But trust in Christ who will baptize
With water and the Spirit
That we may life inherit.
Communion Hymn: 297 Descend, O Spirit, Purging Flame
Recessional Hymn: 594 God of Grace and God of Glory

The composer of this morning’s contemplative organ prelude is a South Carolinian, Robert J. Powell. Born in Benoit, Mississippi in 1932, Robert Powell is currently the organist at Trinity United Methodist Church in Greenville, South Carolina. He has also served as organist/choir director for Christ Episcopal Church in Greenville, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Meridian, Mississippi. Coincidentally, I visited St. Paul’s in Meridian as a substitute organist last spring. It has been a pleasure to serve Trinity Church for the past six months. May your new year bring you great joy as well as moments of contemplation as beautiful as this little organ piece.
