Offertory Anthem: “Christ upon the Mountain Peak”, By: Paul Bouman

Choir: Christ upon the mountain peak stands alone in glory blazing.

Let us, if we dare to speak, with the saints

and angels praise him— Alleluia!

Trembling at his feet we saw Moses and Elijah speaking.

All the prophets and the Law shout through them

their joyful greeting—Alleluia!

Swift the cloud of glory came, God proclaiming in its thunder

Jesus as his Son by name! Nations, cry aloud in wonder! – Alleluia!

This is God’s beloved Son, Law and prophets fade before him,

First and last the only One. Let creation now adore him! Alleluia!

Choir: Eternal light, shine in my heart;

eternal hope, lift up my eyes;

eternal power, be my support;

eternal wisdom, make me wise.

Eternal Live, raise me from death;

eternal brightness, help me see;

eternal Spirit, give me breath;

eternal Savior, come to me:

Until by your most costly grace, invited by your holy word,

at last I come before your face to know you, my eternal Lord.

Happy Transfiguration Sunday! This morning’s hymns are 450, All hail the power of Jesus’ Name; 135, Songs of thankfulness and praise; and 438, Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord. These hymns contain many exclamation points, and express our response to being shown who Jesus truly is Tell out, my soul, the greatness of the Lord!

“All hail the power of Jesus’ Name,” was written by Edward Perronet (1726-1792), a friend and advisor of the Wesleys who later became a Congregational minister. This hymn is often called the “National Anthem of Christendom.” One writer has said, “So long as there are Christians on earth, it will continue to be sung; and after that, in heaven.” An interesting account regarding the relationship between the Wesleys and Perronet concerts the incident when John Wesley announced to a congregation that Edward Perronet would preach at the next service. Being eighteen years younger than Wesley, Perronet had always refused to preach in the elder statesman’s presence. Desiring to avoid a public conflict with Wesley, Perronet mounted the pulpit but quickly explained that he had never consented to preach. “However,” he added, “I shall deliver the greatest sermon that has ever been preached on earth.” Then he read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and sat down without comment.

“Songs of thankfulness and praise,” recounts the readings that are particular to the lectionary assigned to the season of Epiphany. As today is the last Sunday of Epiphany, here are those readings quoted in this hymn, ending with today’s account of the Transfiguration and then a brief overview of scriptural accounts of Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Easter.

“branch of royal David’s stem in thy birth at Bethlehem” (Matt 2:6)

“And at Cana, wedding-guest...changing water into wine” (John 2:1-11)

“Manifest in valiant fight, quelling all the devil’s might” (Luke 8:26-39)

St. 4: “Manifest on mountain height, shining in resplendent light”(Luke 9:29)
