ACNA Ancient Text, 12th Sunday after Pentecost

Sermon on: Galatians

Themes from the readings: Be led by the spirit and not the flesh for the fruits of the spirit are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control; O Israel wait for the LORD, for with the LORD there is mercy; when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

Prelude: “Prelude and Fugue in G Major”, By: J. S. Bach

Processional Hymn: 516 Come down, O Love divine (Down ampney)

Gloria: S280, Powell

First Reading: Galatians 5:16-26

1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O LORD;

LORD, hear my voice;*

let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.

2 If you, LORD, were to note what is done amiss,*

O LORD, who could stand?

3 For there is forgiveness with you;*

therefore you shall be feared.

4 I wait for the LORD; my soul waits for him;*

in his word is my hope.

5 My soul waits for the LORD,

more than watchmen for the morning,*

more than watchmen for the morning.

6 O Israel, wait for the LORD,*

for with the LORD there is mercy;

7 With him there is plenteous redemption,*

and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.

Gospel Hymn: 474 When I survey the wondrous cross (Rockingham)

Gospel: John 16:12-15

Offertory Anthem: “Be Thou My Vision”, Arranged by: Tom Fettke

Soloists: Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art

Thou my best thought, by day or by night,

Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;

I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;

Thou my great Father, I Thy true son,

Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,

Thou mine inheritance, now and always;

Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,

High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

High King of Heaven, my victory won,

May I reach heaven’s joys, Bright Heaven’s Sun!

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,

Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Doxology: Hymn 380, Stanza 3

Holy: S125, Proulx

Communion Meditation:

Recessional Hymn: 655 O Jesus, I have promised (Nyland)

Postlude: “Paean”, By: John Marsh

Here is a list of names following “be thou” in the text of our communion anthem, “Be Thou My Vision”. They’re a lovely mediation to read apart from the text. Be thou...my vision, my best thought, my light, my wisdom, my true word, ever with me, my great Father, in me dwelling, my breastplate, my sword for the fight, my whole armor, my true might, my soul’s shelter, my strong tower, and the first in my heart. Did you notice the battle imagery? The repetitive form and that particular imagery gives away the text as a Lorica, or Breastplate, an ancient Celtic prayer for protection. Of course, it was not originally in English but Gaelic (Rop tú mo bhoile, a Comdi cride).

Another lorica is hymn 370 “St. Patrick’s Breastplate”, a prayer is from the Irish monastic tradition , written somewhere between the eighth and eleventh centuries. I love to teach the English translation to children. Here it is below:

“Christ with me,

Christ before me,

Christ behind me,

Christ within me,

Christ beneath me,

Christ above me,

Christ on my right,

Christ on my left,

Christ when I lie down,

Christ when I sit down,

Christ when I arise,

Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,

Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,

Christ in every eye that sees me,

Christ in every ear that hears me.”
