11am Choral Eucharist, Holy Name Sunday

Rite I, The Feast of the Holy Name (Or the First Sunday after Christmas)

Themes from the Readings: Holy Name

Sermon Title:

Preacher/Sermon on:

Prelude: “In the Bleak Midwinter” By: Mary E. Caldwell, Soloist: Anna Grace Jordan

Soloist: In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone,

Snow had fallen, snow on snow, in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, hea’vn could not hold him nor earth sustain;

Heav’n and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign:

In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,

Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;

But only his mother in her maiden bliss worshipped the Beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb.

If I were a wiseman, I would do my part; yet what I can I give him, give my heart.

Offertory Anthem: Now Greet the Swiftly Changing Year, by: Alfred Fedak

Choir: Now greet the swiftly changing year

With joy and penitence sincere.

Rejoice! Rejoice! With thanks embrace another year of grace.

This Jesus came to end sin’s war;

This name of names for us he bore.

Rejoice...

His love abundant far exceeds

The volume of a whole year’s needs.

Rejoice...

With him as Lord to lead our way

In want and in prosperity,

What need we fear in earth or space

In this new year of grace!

“All glory be to God on high,

And peace on earth!” the angels cry.

Rejoice...

Happy Holy Name Sunday! And Happy New Year! New Year’s day is not particularly a church observance-- we already celebrated the church’s new year on the First Sunday of Advent on November 27th last year.

But, I would be remiss if I didn’t embrace the “pre-Lent” opportunity that New Year’s Day affords us to take stock and identify areas that ache for change.

We are halfway through our choral program year at this point. What an excellent time to join us in our endeavors! If you feel compelled to draw nearer to Christ in scripture and to devote some of your time and talent to Him in this way, please consider coming to one of the following rehearsals:

St. Augustine Adult Choir: Wednesdays 7pm-9pm

Canterbury Handbell Choir: Thursdays 4pm-5pm

Guitar Ensemble: Tuesdays 4pm-5pm

St. Cecilia Youth Choir: Wednesdays 4:15-5:15

Teen Band (RSVP, rehearsals TBD)

“O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven: Be ever present with your servants who seek through music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth; and grant to them even now glimpses of your beauty, and make them worthy at length to behold it unveiled for evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.”
