Music Notes
By: Ashley Sosis
I enjoy planning music in year-long chunks. To play the Prelude, Fugue and Chacconne in C as today’s prelude, meditation and postlude was something I came up with and wrote into the schedule last July. It is a very fun piece to play and it lends itself well to the joyful Season of Easter. It was also my first recital piece from when I was studying informally with Dr. Larry Allen as part of an undeclared organ minor at the Hartt School of Theatre Music and Dance in Hartford, Connecticut. Last July, I had no idea of the bit of bad news I would get from my alma mater this past week and how meaningful it would make playing this piece to me.
Last week, it was made public in a series of news articles that Hartt cancelled its organ program and sold its organ. http://wnpr.org/post/hartt-school-winds-down-organ-program-sells-pipe-organ The “Farewell” Alumni Recital was last weekend, May 1st and I missed it. I missed it because I was instead enjoying my organ students’ mini-recital with other young pianists and organists from all over the Grand Strand at the Pedals, Pipes and Pizza event at First United Methodist Church in Conway. This bad news still stings, but the hope I receive from these very talented young organists is enough to help me look forward to the future.
