Pisgah

[ community, post office & school site ] Pisgah is located north of Perry. Pisgah was the first settlement in Taylor County even before Taylor County began. The first post office was established was Fenholloway. Fenholloway was located on Rocky Creek near the Simmons and Pisgah communities. Rocky Creek was a tributary of the Fenholloway River so is believed to have gotten its name from the river. An early may dated 1877 indicates Fenholloway located northwest of Perry on Rocky Creek, also a 1882 and 1888 map shows the same. The present Fenholloway is located southeast of Perry so this is not the same location. Pisgah was a farming settlement. In early times they worked very hard, went to church and visited their friends. They had parties and candy pullings. There was a store run by John Aman that had groceries, dry goods, and farm equipment. It was located near the "rise." There was a gristmill, a cotton gin and a small sawmill many years ago. In this community there was three churches. There was the Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, the Free Will Baptist Church and the Pisgah Methodist Church. Pisgah had a school site.

The Pisgah School was located on the north side of what is now the Pisgah Road. The Mount Carmel Church is almost directly across the road from the school's location. The church's first service was held in the old schoolhouse. It was constructed of logs.

Henry Grubbs was a farmer in the Pisgah area.

Gracie Wentworth taught at Flat Creek, Rose Creek, Salem and Pisgah. She later married W. T. Cash.
