Covington

[ community, school site & post office (established 20 July 1911 - discontinued 31 August 1912 later moved to Wacissa)

 

Julian Padgett moved to the area of Nutall Rise early in his life. During his career, he was a farmer and sold vegetables at Scanlon, a convict guard and he guarded prisoners at Waylonzo. He was united in marriage by two venerable Rocky Ford ministers: Penn Strickland and B. F. Brooks. This occured at Covington a station on the Seaboard Railroad, about midway between Mt. Gilead and Rocky Ford churches.

Fred Williams attended Shady Grove School and clerked in his father's mercantile establishment. Fred got qualified to teach and was teaching at Covington between Red Oak and Rocky Ford when he was called to service in the First World War.

At a regular meeting of the Board of County Commissioners held in the town of Perry on this 6th day of April AD 1903, the following was discussed:

On motion it was agreed that this board will pay one fourth the cost and expense of building a bridge across Aucilla River at or near Covington's Turpentine Still. Jefferson County will pay one fourth and M.W. Covington one half. T. L. Leggett was appointed a Committee to meet a similar Committee from Jefferson County together with M. W. Covington to select the place, estimate the cost and get up specifications for said bridge and report to the respective boards.
