Bee Tree Pond

[ community & school site (August 2, 1909) ] Bee Tree Pond School was located south of Hampton Springs. At one time A. H. Wentworth and Penn Brannen taught at this school. This school closed atout 1927.

 

The George Brannen family lived in the Bee Tree Pond and Thomas Mill Hammock area of the county. It was customary for the teacher of the Bee Tree Pond School to board there.

 

John Courtney and family was involved in cattle and farming and lived in the Bee Tree Pond section of the county (southwest of Hampton Springs.)

 

The John Thomas family homesteaded near the Bee Tree Pond School, on land that was later the site of Brooks-Scanlon's Camp Hampton.

 

Sarah Shiver King and her brothers and sisters lived with their parents at Cooey Island located about 12 miles west of Perry on the Fenholloway River. The youngsters attended Bee Tree Pond School south of Hampton Springs, from 1922-1925. Sarah remembers A. H. Wentworth and Penn Brannen as two of their teachers in the one room school. Later they attended Perry school and Sarah graduated from TCHS in 1933. Sarah took the teachers exam and was certified to teach in county schools. Her first position was at the one room Econfina School in Gibson's Pasture where she taught for two years. She next taught at Pine Grove School.
