Cabbage Grove

Cabbage Grove was built by the school system in the early 1900's to accomodate the children of families living in Scanlon. Cabbage Grove school was made of logs. Because of decrease population in the Cabbage Grove area the school was closed in the summer of 1960. Cabbage Grove was the last truly rural school in the county. The school was used as a gathering place for the neighborhood. Mr. W. D. Wilson and his wife were the two teachers of thirty nine years , one year short of the schools close.

 

Cabbage Grove had two buses transporting students to and from their homes. They all lived nearby in the heavily wooded country.

 

The school was used as the gathering place of the neighborhood. Picture shows, community entertainments and parties were held at ther school.

 

Ted Lundy taught school at Cabbage Grove.

 

Rev. Penn Strickland lived in the Rocky Ford settlement - the ford refers to the Aucilla River. The Rocky Ford Church and cemetery were about three miles north of Cabbage Grove.

 

S. L. Walker's family moved to Taylor County and spent his early years on Fish Creek. Later he taught at Sand Hill, Stephensville, Carbur, Cabbage Grove and Pleasant Grove.

 

Eddie W. Page was a farmer and cattleman and lived near Cabbage Grove School.
