Boyd

[ community, school site & post office (established 11 June 1904 - changed to RS Rural Station 1 Sept 1958) ] 

William E. Cox operated a sawmill, was a farmer, merchant and also had a turpentine business. His sawmill at Boyd cut the timber used for the trestles when the South Georgia Railroad came to Perry.

Jerry Poppell was a native of Taylor County of the Water Oak Bay area - about three miles west of Boyd.

Lettie Wheelus attended Pine Grove School and later she taught at Deer Palace School and Boyd School.

 

From notes by June Parker McLeod: According to information received from interviewing several people they remember that Boyd had a two room schoolhouse. We think that Abner Parker and Theo Parker were trustees for the school. There might have been more.

 

Boyd was consolidated in with the Perry School in 1927. At this time Bob Murphy owned the bus called the "Boyd Special" and children were bussed to Perry to continue their education. At one time Odell Bass drove the bus to school from Boyd to Perry.

 

The following names have been given about teachers who taught at Boyd. Nola Ringer, wife of Alvin Ringer taught Primer. Kelmer Blue taught 1st grade. Ava Williams or Clara Roberts taught 2nd or 3rd. Fourth grade was taught by Howard Moore's mother for two terms. Annie Blanton taught 5th through 8th grades and was principal at the time that the schools consolidated in 1927. At one time Eddie Love Morress was principal and taught. Tom Davis also taught at Boyd. Mr. Strickland and Mr. Townsend were either teachers or principals at one time. Leon McCallum was at one time principal and also taught 5th through 8th grades.
